Masai Market

April 9, 2017

Here is what I made for breakfast today.  Pretty nice right? :)

Oh, one thing I forgot to mention.  In Kenya, they use this paste instead of dish detergent.  It's pretty much exactly the same thing.

We went to Masai Market today.  I forgot to take pictures, but it looks something like this. The vendors were super aggressive in selling.  If you ask them price of one item, they won't tell you. Or they will tell you after you persistently ask.  Lets say the first item you asked is 100 shillings, you're thinking maybe to get some other stuff.  Now, they won't tell you the price of the other stuff, they ask you to pick out everything you want, then they will give you the best price.  Let's say you pick up two other items that look like they're worth 100 shillings each.  Then, the vendor will tell you all together he gives you the best price, which is 600 shillings.  This is way more than if you add up each individual items.  I think they do this to tourists who may be getting many items, and use this tactic to make them confused.

There was one item I wanted to get from this guy, he said it's 1000 shillings. I said I had to go withdraw cash and i'll come back after.  Then he walked with us to get cash!! I didn't like shopping here very much, it felt so stressful.  Also, there were a lot of beggers just outside of the market.  These are kids and mothers with babies.  They also don't go away if you said no, they will keep following you as you walk, so you had to give them something for them to stop following you.

It was kind of a relief when we finally got inside of a near-by Nakumatt to wait for Uber.
Masai Market
Tonight is the last night in Nairobi.  I cooked dinner and Paul's girlfriend, Loreen, was able to join us! We cooked together. Paul said he will miss us, and it was nice to eat together like a family on his dining table.  He's usually very busy at the hospital.  I will miss him too!
Onion with beef, stirred fried tomato with eggs, veggies, rice, some leftover Ethiopian food from yesterday
Selfie Time!
